Our Granddad Walter Jackman b 1881. Served in the Royal Naval Reserve 921/TS, served on various RN Trawlers mine sweeping in the Atlantic, blowing up mines for safe passage for the convoys. Luckily he survived-or I wouldn't have been here! but it wasn't an easy job (nor were any of them). He earned his 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory medal. I just thought he deserved a mention today.
John also had an Uncle who fought hand to hand with the Japanese on land and another whose boat was torpedoed by the Germans and they spent 10 days in an open boat. When he died Hedon Road was lined with people and John Prescott was there too.
My Dad was actually in a Japanese port when they came into the was and they had to sail out and escape under cover of darkness.

A beautiful photo, so many gave everything we should never forget.
What a lovely way to say thanks to your granddad Carol.

He certainly does deserve a mention. We should never forget any of our young men who endured much more than we can ever imagine. Today is Veteran's Day in the US. I wish I had some of these pictures from my family, but my brother and I divided them years ago and we had to make choices.
Wonderful photos, Carol and yes, he definitely deserves a mention. Good to hear like my Grandad he survived. I took photos of lots of our old family photos, and so glad I did.
what a wonderful memory Carol - thanks for sharing that here! Hugs on this special day xx
Fascinating stories Carol, made even more real by seeing your phots. Thank you for sharing them with us on this auspicious day, reading your post bought a lump to my throat. We owe so much to the ordinary men of this country and all of their stories should be shared so we never forget.

My grandfather also served in WWI (munitions transport) and I've had that very thought--that if he hadn't survived, I wouldn't be here. And really, when honoring our veterans this simple thought is true for all of us--nothing would be the same without them. I just wish we could all get along and there would be no need for soldiers.
Definitely worth mentioning them, "Lest we forget".
I had an Uncle who was a POW of the Japanese on the Burma Railway, we were certainly remembering him.
